— What is Biophilic Design —

Biophilic design is an approach that seeks to connect people with nature within the built environment. It incorporates natural elements, such as light, vegetation, water, and views, into architectural and interior design to enhance well-being, productivity, and overall health. The concept is grounded in the idea that humans have an inherent affinity for nature, a phenomenon known as biophilia.

This approach to design focuses on natural materials, maximizing light, incorporating green spaces, and providing views of nature. It seeks to create tranquil, creative environments that reduce stress and improve air quality, fostering a harmonious connection between people and their surroundings to enhance quality of life.

Biophilic design stems from biophilia, the inherent human affinity for nature, popularized by Edward O. Wilson in 1984. Wilson suggested humans have an innate connection to nature shaped by evolution. Architects and designers recognized the mental and physical benefits of integrating natural elements, aiming to foster a relationship between people and nature to enhance well-being and life quality. This approach can be traced back to ancient civilizations that included gardens and water features in their designs for harmony. In the late 20th century, awareness of environmental issues and research on the health benefits of nature revived biophilic principles. Today, it continues to influence architecture, urban planning, and interior design for healthier, more sustainable spaces.
